Exterior Painting Temperature and Weather – Complete Calendar from March to October

When to paint a house? The success of exterior painting does not depend solely on the paint or the painter’s skill. Weather matters just as much – and work done at the wrong temperature can mean peeling surfaces as early as next winter. In this article, we review when to paint a house, when to wait, and what to check in weather apps before starting work.
Why exterior painting temperature is so important
Paint is a chemical product that requires the right conditions to dry and adhere properly. In temperatures that are too cold, it does not dry optimally – the surface does not achieve its intended strength and remains vulnerable to moisture as early as the first winter. In temperatures that are too hot, the surface dries too quickly, causing blistering and cracking.
The official lower limit for most water-based exterior paints is +5 °C, but in practice the house painting temperature should preferably be +10 °C or higher. The reason is that paint needs several hours of drying time even after painting, and in the evening and at night the temperature can drop considerably.
The upper limit is considered to be around +25–28 °C. However, in direct sunlight the wall surface temperature can rise much higher than this, which is a pitfall that is easily forgotten. Painting on the shaded side often works even in hot weather, as long as the paint’s drying time is taken into account: the surface should remain in shade until dry if the day is very hot.
When to paint a house – monthly calendar
March – not recommended
March is almost always too early for exterior painting in Finland. The days may already feel warmed by the spring sun, but night frosts are still very much present, and the paint does not have time to dry properly before the temperature drops again. March is well suited for preparation, such as surface restoration.
April – variable
April is variable. In southern Finland, work may be possible late in the month if the forecast is stable for at least a week. In northern Finland, April is still mostly too cold.
May – good
If you are hoping to paint your house in spring, May is a valid choice. The days are warm enough, moisture is manageable, and there is plenty of daylight. At the beginning of the month, night frosts are still possible, so the forecast should be monitored carefully. Late May is already an excellent time in many areas.
June – excellent
June is one of the best painting months in terms of conditions. The temperature is suitable, moisture is manageable, and drying is fast. That is precisely why professional painting companies’ calendars for June are usually fully booked well before summer.
July – excellent
July is the second peak month of the main season. However, it is worth remembering the pitfalls of heat: if the air temperature rises above +25 °C and the wall is in direct sunlight, the wall surface temperature can be very high. In this case, the paint dries so quickly that it does not have time to level out before drying. The solution is simple: follow the movement of the sun and always paint the wall that is in shade.
August – good
August is still a good time to paint, but often surprisingly autumnal. The dew point temperature rises at night and moisture begins to accumulate on surfaces: so take morning and evening dew into account. During painting and paint drying, the relative humidity should be below 80 percent. Work still often succeeds when the forecast is favorable and conditions are measured before starting.
September – variable
Painting a house in autumn is possible, and September is often an underrated painting month. The heat of summer is gone, the days are still reasonably long, and surface temperatures remain manageable. The challenge is increasing moisture: the dew point temperature rises, which means the surface may be more moist than is visible to the eye. A professional knows how to take air humidity into account before starting work.
October – risky
October is already risky. In southern Finland, good windows for painting can sometimes be found in the early part of the month, but if the forecast shows night frosts within the next week, work should not be started. Late October is practically usually already too late.
Can you paint a house in the rain?
No.
The surface must be genuinely dry, and even after painting the surface must remain protected from rain for at least 4–8 hours depending on the product and temperature. Always check drying times in the product data sheet of your chosen paint.
The reason is simple: moisture on the surface to be painted prevents the paint from adhering and can cause blistering, peeling, or an uneven surface.
Exterior painting and dew point
Just as important as rain is the dew point. Air always contains more or less moisture. When air cools, it can no longer hold all that moisture, and the moisture condenses into water on surfaces. The dew point is the temperature at which this happens. If the wall surface temperature is close to the dew point temperature, moisture condenses on the surface even though the air feels dry. The dew point can easily be determined using various calculators.
Also remember wind, sun, and air humidity
Moderate wind is still acceptable, but strong wind dries the paint too quickly and can carry dust and dirt onto the wet surface. Direct sunlight raises the surface temperature significantly, which is why a good painter follows the movement of the sun and always works on the shaded side of the wall. High air humidity, i.e. over 80%, slows drying and increases the risk of condensation. In the best conditions, humidity is 40–70%.
